Oothapam, a Savoury Pan cake where you can get in almost all South Indian restaurants with lots of versions (Plain Oothapam, Onion Oothapam, Tomato Oothapam, Veg Oothapam & many many varieties). This Oothapam is home made garnished with Onions and sometimes with finely chopped vegetables. Tastes Yummy when hot & crispy, accomplished along with Chutneys & Sambar.

Batter needs to be prepared one day earlier & Fermentation needs to take place.

(Avoid Non-Stick Pans as much as Possible)

Servings: 4 Persons


Idly Batter (Click here for the recipe)

Oil (to fry Oothapan in Pan)

For Seasoning:

Mustard (1tsp)

Split Chenna Dal (2tsp)

Onion (Finely Chopped 1 cup)

Green Chilliy (Finely Chopped 2tsp)

Coriander leaves (Finely Chopped 1 tsp)


Carrot (Finely Chopped ¼ cup)

French Beans (Finely Chopped ¼ cup)


Heat 2tsp oil in a Pan, add mustard, wait till it sputters, add Split chenna dal, and vegetables, Saute for a minute.

Add the above mixture to the Batter, Mix well.

Heat Dosa Pan, add 2 scoops of batter & flatten it.

Add Oil on the top of the dosa & to the surroundings of the thick dosa.

Turn gently & roast it the other side.

When ready, Serve Hot.


Dole out hot, Crispy Oothapam with Chutney / Sambar / Gun Powder.
