Vazhaithandu / Plantain stem is most fibrous healthiest food to be considered to be consumed atleast once a week. Banana stem is rich in potassium & vitamin-B6. Valaithandu is used prevent and treat kidney stones.

Servings: 4 Persons


Banana Stem – 2 cups (chopped finely)

Moong Dal – ¼cup (soak in water for a hour)

Mustard Seeds – ¼tsp

Red dry chilli – 2nos

Coconut – ½cup grated

Asafoetida – 2 pinches

Turmeric Powder – ¼tsp

Salt – to taste

Curry leaves – a sprig

Oil – ½tsp


Heat oil in a pan, add curry leaves, red chilli & mustard & wait till mustard sputters.

Add  banana stem, moong dal, turmeric powder, asafoetida, salt & mix well.

Add ½cup of water & cook the vegetable till soft in low flame, cover with a lid, Stir often.

When ready, garnish with grated coconut & saute once.


Dole out yummy Raw Plantain Stem Poriyal, tastes good with Rice.
