Shallots (Sambar Onion or called as Small onion) roasted in oil & grinded with Red chillies, has a sweetish spicy taste, goes good with Idly / Dosa.

Servings: 4 Persons


Shallots (1cup) (or chopped Onion)

Dry Red chillies (5nos)

Tamarind (¼lemon Size)

Mustard (¼tsp)

Split Urad dal (1tsp)

Asafoetida (2 pinches)

Oil (2tsp)

Salt (to taste)


Heat oil in a pan, add mustard, split urud dal, dry red chillies, saute, wait till mustard sputters.

Add Shallots (or onions), saute for 2-3 minute in low flame.

Remove and add to the Electric blender, along with Salt & Tamarind.

Grind to paste with less water.


Dole out Yummy Onion Chutney, goes good with Idly / Dosa / Uppma / Pongal
